Alumni were invited to a virtual discussion on Coronavirus and the global economy: what next?, which took place on 16 April at 13:00 (BST/GMT+1) via Facebook Live. Keynote speakers were EBRD Chief Economist Beata Javorcik and the three former Chief Economists and fellow alumni: - Professor Erik Berglöf ('14), London School of Economics and Political Science
- Professor Sergei Guriev ('19), SciencesPo Paris and
- Professor Lord Nicholas Stern ('99), London School of Economics and Political Science
The discussion was moderated by Jonathan Charles, EBRD Managing Director, Communications. The economic and political impacts of the coronavirus pandemic are growing more dramatic by the day. Millions of businesses and the jobs they support are under threat. Commentators already fear the steepest economic slump since the Great Depression in the 1930s. Civil liberties are coming under pressure in many countries. The panellists examined the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on climate change, trade, globalisation and the many other challenges emerging from the pandemic across the EBRD regions in Europe, Asia and Africa and beyond. The event was jointly organised by the EBRD and LSE Institute of Global Affairs (IGA) at the LSE School of Public Policy. To view the discussion, enter the EBRD Facebook page at the respective time. You will see a window popping up at the bottom of your page, asking you to either log in to Facebook or to create an account. You can ignore this window, as you are able to watch the discussion without choosing either option. When accessing the video on the phone, you can close the window by clicking on the "x" sign in the right top corner. On the computer, hover over the Facebook Live video and some signs will appear at the bottom of the video. Click on the two arrows to enlarge. The window asking you to log in or create an account will disappear.
