Michael Hesketh ('13) passed away

03 May 2019

It is with much sadness that we have learnt that our former colleague and friend, Mike Hesketh passed away earlier this week at the age of 46. His death was unexpected and it goes without saying that this is a great shock for all who knew Mike and had the pleasure of working with him. Although Mike left the Bank in 2013, his career at EBRD spanned over 20 years and many of you will remember him fondly, not least for his sharp intellect, self- deprecating wit, warmth, and willingness to engage with all in the Bank, no matter their level of seniority.

Mike’s career at the Bank started in 1991 delivering faxes for the then First Vice President, Ron Freeman. Ron spotted his talent and quickly expanded his role - one of his assignments was to establish the EBRD’s first ever portfolio monitoring spreadsheet. From those very humble beginnings his ability was clear and his career progress was swift, in fact coming full circle by 2008 when he was made Acting Director in Risk for the Bank’s entire portfolio. His roles in Corporate Recovery, Risk and Financial Institutions prepared him well when he was seconded to the European Stability Mechanism to focus on trying to resolve the Greek banking crisis. He impressed his new colleagues so much that the secondment led to a permanent offer and for the last four years Mike had been commuting between the ESM in Luxembourg, Greece, and his family who remained in England.

Our deepest sympathies extend to his wife Petra, their three children and wider family.
