Maria Gorbyleva passed away

16 July 2019

A sunny Monday morning in Moscow suggests that it is a regular working day. But today I am buying white roses – an even number of them, according to Russian folk tradition – bound by a black ribbon.

I enter the church and squeeze through the crowd of grief-stricken people who, like me, have come to say their last goodbyes to Masha.

Among the mourners are family, friends, godchildren, orphans that Masha took care of and her colleagues from the EBRD. The sad news that Masha had passed away after years of fighting a terminal illness came as a shock to many.

Masha joined the EBRD Financial Institutions team in the Moscow Resident Office in 2014. She was quick to display her competence and professionalism, and focused on FI business in Russia from Moscow and contributed to many projects in EU countries while on rotation in HQ.

During her time in London, Masha began her struggle with a rare disease. After undergoing medical treatment and taking a year off work, it seemed the worst was over. Masha went back to work in Moscow and took on more projects in Kazakhstan and Georgia. However, the disease unfortunately returned.

Masha was kind, bright, positive and easy going. She was friendly, approachable and always willing to help those around her without expecting anything in return.

It is hard to understand how someone could withstand all the challenges she did without losing character, faith and an unwavering smile.

While it is difficult to imagine life without Masha, her memory will remain in all of our minds and hearts.

Rest in peace, Masha.
